Answers

Q: Is Rise & Fall going to be like Rome: Total War?

A: Nope, Rick Goodman himself says "This is much more like an Age of Empires than a Rome: Total War. Every unit you've seen may have been in a formation, but it's not a set piece in battle as is the case in Rome."

Q: What will the system requirements be for Rise & Fall?

A:Minimum Requirements:
1.5 GHZ CPU
512 MB RAM
128 MB Video Card

Recommended Requirements:
3 GHZ CPU
1 GIG RAM
128 MB Video Card

Q: What resources are in the game?

A: Rick Goodman has said "Wood and Gold are the economic resources that are in the game, however Glory and Stamina are also resources that are needed to level up your heroes in game. Glory is attained by exploring the map, defeating your enemies and expanding your empire. Once a certain amount of glory is attained you can level up your hero which then increases his stamina. Stamina determines how long you can stay in hero mode."

Q: What civilizations are playable in Rise & Fall?

A: There are four playable civilizations, Persia, Rome, Greece, and Egypt

Q: Will you be able to age up in Rise & Fall like in previous SSSI titles?

A: Rise and Fall is based only in Ancient times. However advancing heroes' levels will be somewhat considered equivalent to "aging" like in Age of Empires. Leveling up your hero will unlock new upgrades and weapons for your civilization, so all focus and energy is being used to bring the ancient world to life.

Q: Is Rise & Fall completely in real time or will there be also a turn based mode?

A: Rise & Fall is 100% real time.

Q: How many different types of units will be available in Rise & Fall?

A: There will be over 80 units available in Rise of War including swordsman, archers, elephants and naval units. Just about every unit is unique to its civilization.

Q: What's this I hear about minor civilizations, will you be able to play as these civs?

A: Initially 4 minor civilizations were going to be incorporated into the game. These were scraped for development reasons.

Q: How many players in Multiplayer mode?

A: Eight, as in previous games.

Q: How will alliances work in Rise & Fall?

A: This is currently unknown.

Q: What will the Artificial Intelligence be like in Rise and Fall? Can we expect near Human reactions from the computer player?

A: That is the plan at this time. The game is scheduled for release in Q2, 2006 and the strategic competence/intelligence/adaptability of the AI will become clearer when the beta version of the game is reviewed later this year.

Q: Who will be the Multiplayer Server for R&F?

A: This has not been publicly disclosed, but SSSI has issued the unprecedented statement that "Fully optimized network code ensures problem-free online gaming experience" - This assurance has been corroborated by some HG insiders who have had contact with the team at SSSI doing this optimization work.

Q: Can heros or R&F generally be modded?

A: There is no definitive word on this from SSSI, but SSSI's previous titles, Empire Earth and Emires: Dawn of the Modern World were not highly modable for random map (SP & MP skirmish) games. R&F has a very powerful editor, however, and it is expected that almost everything in the game will be modable for custom scenarios. You can learn more about Rise and Fall's editor here.

Q: How does Hero Mode work and how long can you stay in hero mode?

A: The general understanding we have is that Stamina is slowly gained through gameplay successes, but we don't know much more than that. The amount of stamina a hero has "in the tank" determines how long you can stay in hero mode. Also, we've heard that the hero's stamina capacity can be increased by "leveling up," so this is another factor in "how long" you can stay in hero mode. Lastly, we've been told that stamina can be used quickly or slowly depending on what the hero is doing, so there are a lot of factors that go into determining "how long." It could be at least a 2 or 3 minutes in the heat of battle, if the video of Alexander storming a fortress/wall is an accurate measure.

Q: Will Trade be implemented in Rise and Fall and if so how will it work?

A: There is no indication that trade routes will be part of the economic system in R&F skirmish games.

Q: What kind of maps are available in Rise and Fall? Will it have a random map generator?

A: Rick Goodman has stated that all skirmish maps are integrated into the editor, and for this reason can be highly customized, just like a scenario map. We know that the editor is extremely powerful, but we don't know for sure whether there will be auto generated, truly random maps for SP or MP games. It seems possible from Rick's comments that there will be vanilla maps and maps that can be "randomized" to a significant degree by the game host.

Q: How do units heal or can they be healed?

A: The Egyptians have a unit called a "Healer", which automatically heals nearby friendly units. As for the rest of the civs, it's likely that units can either self-heal or can be healed by other units at some level of the game, as this is pretty standard in the RTS genre. We don't have any details on how this may work at this point, however.

Q: Is there a minimum number of similar units that can joined into a "formation" in order to gain morale benefits?

A: We speculate that there must be, since military formations generally had a minimum effective strength. At this time there is no information confirming this in R&F, but stay tuned for any updates.

Q: Is there a demo for Rise and Fall?

A:Yes, you can download the demo here. The demo allows you to play one scenario from the Egyptian campaign and a single player skirmish map called "The Corridor of Blood".

Q: Is there anything known on the maximum amount of units that can be used on a battlefield for each nation?

A: Rick Goodman has stated at various times "thousands" and "hundreds" can be supported. However this has to do with many variables. Style of play(Deathmatch/standard) whether it is a MP or SP game. Also system specs will undoubtly have a say on how many units can be supported.

Q: How do formations work when units are on top of structures, or when they are climbing on ladders?

A: Units will ungroup as they climb or descend a ladder. They will regroup once they climbed up or down the ladder.

Q: Can horse archers shoot while they are moving?

A: Yes. Horse archers will be able to target and fire at units as they move.

Q: How will the game ship?

A: Rise and Fall will ship on both DVD and CD format.

Q: Does Rise and Fall have a Cinematic introduction?

A: Yes.

Q: Can units mount or dismount horses?

A: No. Units will be able to mount other objects capable of moving such as chariots.

Q: Will some of the monuments of the ancient world, like the Parthenon and the Flavian Amphitheater be featured in Rise and Fall?

A: Yes, these buildings will be visible in the campaigns. They can also be utilized in the scenario editor.

Q: Will the editor be shipped with the game?

A: Yes. You can learn more about Rise and Fall's editor here

Q: How do peasants/villagers/citizens construct buildings?

A: Peasents/villagers/citizens construct buildings in a way that is fairly similar to Empires: Dawn of the Modern World.

Q: What is the population cap in Rise and Fall?

A: The population cap is currently 5k. This may be subject to change as the game nears release.

Q: Is there a counter system in Rise and Fall?

A: Yes. The counter system will be similar to Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern world in that it will be a Rock/Paper/Scissor style of counter system.

Q: When is Rise and Fall scheduled for release?

A: Rise and Fall in scheduled for release in June of 2006. However, Johner Riehl, one of Midway's representatives on our forums suggested that forumers should be counting down towards this date 6/12/06, as the final release date.

Q: Will players be able to record their games in Rise and Fall to view again at a later date?

A: No, unfortunately this feature caused significant grief during the development process and had to be cut.
