Matt Vella - General Information

Matt Vella, the associate producer of Rise and Fall was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about the game recently. Here are our questions and his responses:

Q. Hey Matt, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be involved with Rise and Fall?
Matt: I’ve been with Midway for quite some time now…over 8 years. When Midway signed up Rise and Fall, I was excited about getting into PC development again and asked to work on it.
Q. What is your favourite aspect of the game?
Matt: Hero command is by far my favorite aspect. It allows you to see things that you can’t see from the RTS view, and also to do things that are both fun and useful at the same time.
Q. Through the demo we have seen Egypt’s Advisors, what kind of Advisors do the other civilizations have?
Matt: Each civilization has a nice variety of advisors that make sense for that particular society. For instance, the Royal Armorer of Persia gives your hero extra defense. Or the seemingly lowly Rat Catcher of Rome, which boosts the morale of your troops. What’s nice is that you can choose advisors based on your style of play, and also utilize them to shore up any potential weak spots that your civ. might have.
Q. What kind of post release support can we expect?
Matt: We will be watching the boards and listening to customer feedback for as long as it makes sense to do so. We will naturally post updates when needed.
Q. How much time has been spent working on the multiplayer interface? Can you give us a brief summary of what we can expect in terms of multiplayer service from Rise and Fall?
Matt: You can expect a fully featured, online real time strategy game.
Q. Will there be an option to have multiplayer games by Direct IP hosting (as in other SSSI titles) or will MP games require the use of a hosting service (GameSpy)?
Matt: Yes, you can connect via IP.
Q. What kind of technical support will be offered for R&F? Free/online/web & email based? Live chat? Has your tech support staff reviewed any of the posts in our technical support thread?
Matt: We’re ramping up our tech support staff now; they’ll mainly be available via e-mail and we may go live chat as well. I’ll know more after the kick off meeting next week.
Q. We've heard from other Midway staffers that Europe is expected to be a very strong market for R&F, perhaps even stronger than the US market. Do you agree, and if so, why do you think this is the case?
Matt: We’re expecting great things from Europe, mainly because of the fact that RTS games are still huge there, particularly in Germany. If we deliver a great game, which I think we have, we will enjoy brisk sales worldwide.
