Many questions have been officially responded to in Midway's Knowledge base (text search using keywords or error codes)

Q: How much space does the game require for installation?
A: Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War requires approximately 3 GB of free hard drive space for installation.

Q: I am getting errors when trying to uninstall the game from Windows Add or Remove Programs control panel.
A: To correct this, you will need to re-run setup.exe from the Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War disc. This will clear up the error and you can uninstall and reinstall the game.

Q: I am getting a error during installation, "Error Code: -5009 : 0x8002802b".
A: This usually indicates that you do not have Admin access on the computer you are installing in Windows 2000 or XP. If you have Admin access, please refer to the following article about this Installshield error on the other possible causes and fixes for this issue:

Q: I run Rise & Fall by double-clicking on the RiseAndFall.exe and it starts to run, but quits right away.
A: Rise & Fall needs to know where its data files are located. Make a Shortcut to the RiseAndFall.exe and add
-datapath "data\" -redistpath "redist\" -nodump
to the end of the "Start In:" line. Do this by right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting Properties.

Q: I am getting an installshield -5003 error.
A: Please try the following:

1. Search for the InstallShield folder (by default, the full path is C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield).
2. In the search results, right-click the InstallShield folder, choose Rename, type InstallShieldOld, and press Enter.
3. Close all open programs.
4. Try installing the game again.
5. If the problem persists, search for the InstallShield folder again (refer to Step 1 for instructions).
6. In the search results, right-click the InstallShield folder and choose Delete. Click Yes or OK to confirm the deletion.
7. Now search for the InstallShieldOld folder. Once located, right-click it, choose Rename, type InstallShield, and press Enter.
8. Install the game.

*Disclaimer: Before you purchase any video card, you are soley repsonsible for verifying that it will run R&F; the information provided above is unofficial and is only based on generic, synthetic performance benchmarks.

-Rise & Fall supports wide screen modes/monitors.
-Rise & Fall supports dual monitor play as of patch v1.11. Prior versions do not.

Q: Can I run the game on my system with an S3 video card?
A: The S3 series of video cards do not support the functionality necessary to run the game and are not supported.

Q: I cannot get my game to work on my system with the SIS 530 onboard video chip.
A: The SIS 530 onboard video chip is an older chip which does not have the memory or required functionality to run the program. This chip is no longer supported by SIS, and no new drivers are available for this video card. Note also that no Windows XP drivers are available for this chip.

Q: Will the program work on a system with an Intel 82810/82815 or 82845/82865 onboard video card?
A: The Intel 810/815 and 845/865 chipsets do not meet the minimum requirements to run the program. The program requires a card that supports hardware T&L (Transform and Lighting), and these Intel chipsets do not have the required DirectX functionality necessary to run the game.

Q: Will the SIS series of video cards work with the program?
A: The SiS series of video cards do not support the functionality required to run the program and are not supported. These are onboard chipset which use Shared Memory, and they do not support OpenGL or D3D functionality. The following SIS chipsets are affected: SiS 6326, 5597/5598, 530/620, 315, 550, 650, M650, 651, 740, 330, 661FX, M661FX/MX, 741, 760. Xabre 200, 400 and 600

Q: How can I improve the performance of Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War?
A: There are several things you can do to increase game performance.

- Make sure you have no other programs running in the background.

- The Game will run faster in lower resolutions, and with lower settings in the Video Options. Set your resolution lower (like 1024x768 or 800x600) and also check the Video Options and set those lower as well.

Try the following options to improve performance:

- If your video card has less than 128 megs of RAM you should probably set your Texture Quality to Low. This will reduce the size of the textures stored on your video card and will allow your video card to hold more textures. This will increase your framerate but degrade visual quality a little.

- If you still feel you're not getting a good frame rate (the game feels sluggish), click the Reset Defaults button and then Apply Changes. This will cause the game to do a check of your Computer and Video cards capabilities and make recommendations (Make sure to Apply Changes).

- If after doing the above steps you are still experienceing sluggishness, set everything to Low (this will allow the game to run at it's fullest, but without alot of fancy bells and whistles).

Rise & Fall uses TCP (33335) and UDP (33321) ports to communicate with other Computers.

If you are experienceing problems connecting with other Computers you may need add settings to your Windows Firewall or external Router/Firewall. We have attempted to resolve this in our Game, but sometimes programs (like Windows Firewall, Norton Internet Security, restrict Internet Traffic (TCP and UDP) in an attempt to secure your computer.

During Installation we have configured Windows Firewall to properly allow us to communicate, but if you reset defaults or made changes, you may have inadvertantly removed it. If you reinstall Rise & Fall we will set it for you again.

If you are using another program or external device (like a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, etc), consult your manual on how to forward ports (33335 and 33321) to your computer.

There are a number of things to consider when playing network games like Rise and Fall. If you have tried but failed to play online, review these possible issues:

If the gateway to your home network is a router, you have to forward the ports to your gaming PC. All router manufacturers provide details on how to do this. Generally, it's not difficult to do, and you only do it once. Look at the device documentation, or find the manual online at their web site, and/or Google it. Because all router models have a slightly different method of doing port forwarding, and a different interface for setting it up, make sure to get directions specific to your router model number.

If you have a cable modem (or dialup) you don't have to forward ports.

R&F configures Windows firewall automatically (if you use it). If you reset defaults or made changes, you may have inadvertantly removed the proper configuration of Windows firewall. If you reinstall Rise & Fall, the setup process will set it for you again. If you use a 3rd party firewall (Zone Alarm et al) you need to specifically allow R&F.exe to act as a server.

Certain anti-virus programs or "Internet Security" products have firewall features (worm-blocking, spyware blocking, etc.) that can interfere with online gaming/hosting, so you need to make sure they are properly configured or temporarily disabled. If you disable software, always do it through the application's control panel, not by killing the task in Task Manager.

Rise & Fall uses TCP (33335) and UDP (33321) ports to communicate with other Computers. Unless there is some unknown exploit unintentionally coded into R&F, opening these ports correctly does not increase the security risk to your computer, since only Rise and Fall's executable will respond to data flowing in/out on these ports.

You should never open ports universally to the internet, as this DOES pose a significant security risk to your PC. Virtually all software firewalls are "application aware" and you can safely allow a single app to act as a server on the ports recommended by the publisher/developer of the game. If you do not know how to safely open ports, ask someone to help you.

y they change it all of a sudden?

also does the ram really matter?
games that need 512rams can play kinda well with 256.

My system is uber, but the game will abruptly crash to the desktop, at different times.

So the game consistently disappears, but it happens at varying times.

"Recommended Requirements:*

Processor: Intel P4, 3.2 GHz or greater; or AMD Athlon 64 3200 or greater (Single-core recommended; games do not make use of dual core technology and sometimes do not run well on dual-core processors)"

Big correction here. Not all games utilize dual core technology. However, Rise and Fall DOES utilize dual core technology. The performance increase is significant. We worked very closely with AMD on this, and they are even astounded at the results. They have some new multi-core processors coming out that make even better use of the multi threading capabilities of R&F.

Be excited, those lucky gamers that have dual core systems. Be very excited.

Thanks for dropping by and letting us know this, DoctorKilljoy. Was it ever made public previously that R&F supports dual core CPUs? I'd never heard it until I read your post.

I don't see any mention of the Intel integrated graphics chips listed here.

Just thought I'd let everyone know, Rise and Fall is working and running fine on my 9xx Intel integrated graphics.

@ hzh87

I think I responded to this in another thread already. If I recall, you play online mostly. For online play, I turn everything down to lowest except 1024X768 resolution since all I care about is speed/response time. Your system should be better depending on how optimally configured it is for gaming. The hardware's good for starters though.

The more units you have, the more important it becomes to have both a very fast CPU (dual-core) and and very fast vid card. 3000 units onscreen battling will use a boatload of cycles just calculating damage, and flaming arrows use a lot of GPU time, I'm sure, just as they do in Rome: TW.

I got a problem with this:
____________________________________________________________ __
Q: I run Rise & Fall by double-clicking on the RiseAndFall.exe and it starts to run, but quits right away.
A: Rise & Fall needs to know where its data files are located. Make a Shortcut to the RiseAndFall.exe and add
-datapath "data\" -redistpath "redist\" -nodump
to the end of the "Start In:" line. Do this by right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting Properties.
____________________________________________________________ __

What is -datapath "data\" -redistpath "redist\" -nodump ??

In my "Start in" line i got this:
"C:\Programmer\Midway Home Entertainment\Rise and Fall Demo\Bin\"

What is the problem?
